Student Advocacy Counselling
The Student Advocacy Counselors at J.A. Williams High School support students to achieve desired outcomes and promote positive change. By providing proactive leadership that engages all stakeholders in the delivery of programs and services, students are provided with the tools to achieve success in a school of multi cultural diversity. Response includes individual and small-group counseling, individual/family/school crisis intervention, peer facilitation, consultation/collaboration and referrals. Advocating for the student and their education, empowering students by focusing on and building on their strengths, encouraging growth within interpersonal relationships, promoting positive attitudes and choices are some of the services provided.
School and community volunteering is a focus of leadership and peer support groups facilitated by counselors. School counseling programs are essential for students to achieve optimal personal growth, acquire positive social skills and values, set appropriate career goals and realize full academic potential to become productive, contributing members of society.
Knowledge of legal issues and ethics arise more often for school counselors because their clients are minors, they have responsibilities to numerous constituencies (students, their parents and guardians, teachers, and administrators), and they have a large number of students to counsel. School counselors are an integral part of school-based suicide prevention, crisis management, and pre/post intervention efforts. Team building and development with administration staff and community is an integral part of a counselor.
